Nuvo | ThumbsForFood

In the bid to search for the most value-for-money set lunch in town, we found our way to Nuvo. Nuvo is situated in Marina Square's Dining Edition. Nuvo is a contemporary Italian Restaurant that has Japanese influences. Nuvo has a slightly more open dining area, that are more large group and family friendly. They also have more private areas in the restaurant.

Nuvo's usual ala carte menu can be found here. The process of their usual mains range from $32 onwards, Starters at $15 onwards and sweets at $12 onwards. For the month of August, Nuvo's set lunch is priced at $15++. It seems that their prices for set lunch sometimes vary according to every month. At $15++ for set lunch, we found the deal irresistible and thus, visited the place to try out the menu.

We were served with complimentary bread and garlic butter. The bread was served warm and was absolutely comforting for the start of the meal. It had hints of rosemary and other herbs which enhanced the flavour of the bread. Additional servings are chargeable.

Complimentary Bread & Garlic Butter

The default starter is actually the Pumpkin soup seen below with a slice of candied bacon. I took a look at the August Menu and realised that the soup was changed to Baby Green Pea Soup. The Pumpkin soup was really quite good and smooth. It lifted our palate for the meal.

Pumpkin Soup

We decided to try their other starters on the menu as well. The one below is Mugi Cha Smoked Salmon, which we had to add $3 on top of the standard set lunch price. The dish is served with Wasabi Cream, Furikake (a type of Japanese rice seasoning) and Baby Spinach. It was quite delicious and refreshing. The portion was a little on the small side.

Mugi Cha Smoked Salmon

For mains, the default main is the Linguini with char-grilled pork. I see that this item might also change depending on the months. For August, it was Corn and Crab Linguini. Based on first sight, the linguini looked lifeless and bland. But, surprisingly, it tasted really flavourful and uplifting. We felt that the sauce of the linguini was done really well. The pork slices were also tender, juicy and well-marinated.

Linguini with Char-grilled pork

With an additional $4, you get to upgrade the default main course to a Cotoletta "My Way" - which is Crispy Chicken Breast, rice, Mozzarella and Japanese Curry. We thought that the chicken was done neatly. I however, did not really know how to appreciate Japanese Curry. It tasted quite good to me as it wasn't as sweet as other curry versions.

Cotoletta "My Way"

For additional of $5, you can choose their Pork Collar. We read prior to our visit that their Pork Collar was delicious. Our pork collar was grilled and topped with cheese and a handful of greens. The sauce plated alongside the pork went really well with the meat. The pork was tender and tasty. Do give it a try if you're a pork lover.

For desserts, the default is their Lychee Panna Cotta. We all agreed that the Panna Cotta was one of the best we have ever eaten thus far. The texture was light, the flavour refreshing without being too thick. We could easily finish the whole bowl without any effort. The slices of fruit and mikan added tinges of sweetness to the Panna Cotta, providing it with a good balance. Definitely a recommended dessert!

Panna Cotta

For an additional $4, you can get their Black & White, which is a chocolate pie served with crumble and a dash of honey & fig ice-cream. The chocolate was really rich. For hardcore chocolate lovers, this might be the dessert for you. Personally, I felt that it was too heavy and I would prefer the Panna Cotta.

Black & White

Overall, we felt that Nuvo's set lunch was really value-for-money because of the good quality. We would stick to the default menu the next time we are here but, feel that new patrons should definitely try their various dishes in the menu to get a good feel of the cuisine they offer.

ROOM coffee. bar | ThumbsForFood

Do you know where is ARC (Alexandra Retail Centre)? It is located at Labrador Mrt Station and just along the Pasir Panjang stretch! I guess this place caters mainly to the working adults there as most shops close early. Spinelli there closes at 7pm, if I remember correctly! One fine day, we decided to visit this place and have a food hunt and so we found ROOM. It is a cosy little cafe tucked at a corner of ARC. I really liked the simple decorations of the place.

Oh yes, I need to mention the most important point! There is actually one-for-one for the pastas on weekday nights, from 6 pm onwards. I am not sure how long the promotion would last for, so if you are interested, catch it soon!

Spicy Prawn Linguine $17. Well, they had the description -ask for more chili padi if you dare- and so I was anticipating this dish to be spicy. I guess I was pretty disappointed when it turned out to be not spicy at all. The taste was okay and there were quite a few prawns around! I like the rocket vegetables scattered on top of the pasta!

Seafood Linguine in Black Pepper Oyster Sauce $14. Peppery asian pasta served with scallops and prawns. I guess it tasted much like the black pepper seafood pasta at swensen's but I would prefer the latter hands down. Pretty plain plate of pasta I would say.

Okay, this is really random. But we found this sign to be cute so we decided to take a photo of it. Yes, there is free wifi for those who are interested!

Carbonara $12.5. This was good. But I guess it was a little too peppery for me. For the price, I would say I am satisfied with the standard!

Prawn Laksa Pesto Spaghetti $14. Well, this is the best of all 4 pastas in my opinion. But, it is really up to individual. It was really savoury and I finished it to the last bit. Really worth a try, especially if you like your food with a little more zest and spice!

All in all, I would say ROOM serves up pretty mediocre pastas but the price is really a bargain, especially if you visit it during its one-for-one promotion. One person only need to pay around $7 bucks! And one more thing, it runs on a self-service concept so do not expect to be served and waited on.

ROOM coffee. bar also serves up brunch on both weekdays and weekends at pretty affordable prices! Eggs benedict is only at $11. I would certainly take time out on a Saturday morning to try the breakfast at ROOM if I am around the vicinity!

Our rating of ROOM coffee. bar: 6.8/10 (based on the pastas)

Brunetti (Tanglin Mall) | ThumbsForFood

Brunetti originated from Austrailia and is well known for its desserts as well as coffee. It also serves breakfast menu where it's specialty breakfast set is available till 2pm. It also has an all-day breakfast menu as well as an all-day dining menu which serves main courses.

Exterior of Brunetti
When you step into the restaurant you would be greeted by a cozy ambience with rows of desserts, pies, pastries, gelato lining on the right. It makes me excited to see the different variety of food placed in glass displays. It just whets the appetite. Your will have to get your own seat in the restaurant and order straight from their counter.

We didn't manage to catch the breakfast menu available till 2pm. However, if you get to Brunetti's in time for it, do try the Italian Breakfast ($14.90). It is highly recommended by my friend for its generous portion.

We decided to order dishes from the all-day breakfast section as well as main courses. The food is pretty affordable with most prices ranging from $10 to $20+.

Italian Pan Eggs came literally in a pan. It comes with about 3 eggs and topped with garnish and cherry tomatoes. Bread is served alongside for you to go along with your eggs. Personally, I find the dish quite ordinary. I don't think I would order this dish again because it really isn't very special.

Italian Pan Eggs
Risotto with Italian Sausages was one of our choices. As Risotto lovers, we wanted to check out where's the best risotto in town. Sad to say, the risotto here wasn't amazing. It has it's own unique flavor and the rice is quite wholesome. The Italian sausages however, was just normal. Nothing exciting about the dish we felt.

Risotto with Italian Sausages
Seafood Stew was one of our favorite dishes that day. It is served with two slices of bread and a handful of greens. The delicious thing was it's flavorful gravy and portion of seafood. The gravy is thick and most suitable to be eaten with bread. There is pasta that is inside the dish as well. I really like the pasta as it was well-cooked and thus have a good texture. Definitely a must-have when we visit this place again.

Seafood stew
Red Snapper was a recommendation by the waiter. The fish is served beautifully on the p[late which makes it look extremely appealing to the tastebuds. The fish was cooked well and fresh. What I really liked was that the fish complemented really well with the mushrooms, slices of fruits, olives and gravy that was served. It is really quite an appetizing and refreshing dish.

Signature Red Snapper
Truffle fries ($10) wasn't the best we tasted. But, we all agreed that we would order this dish again. The truffle taste was even throughout the fries. If you're a fan of truffle fries, you'll enjoy the one here.
Truffle Fries
For desserts, we ordered Yuzu Macaron and Lemon Meringue Tart.

The Yuzu Macaron I felt is quite special and it's yuzu flavor really permeated the shell of the macaron. The filling is chocolate that we felt complemented the yuzu flavor well.

The Lemon Meringue Tart was highly recommended in online reviews. So, we had to try it for ourselves. I felt that the lemon feeling in the tart was good and went well with the meringue on top of it. The meringue wasn't too sweet which was good because I am not fan of sweet meringues. Do try the tart if you're there for desserts!

We ordered Flat White to go with our desserts. The coffee there is brewed well. Coffee lovers do not hesitate to order a cuppa to go with your breakfast or brunch!

Overall, we would be back for it's brunch before 2pm. The brunch here as quipped from a friend is one of the most affordable, good quality and generous portion. The mains has some hits and misses. For the desserts, we found it a bit too pricey in relative to it's other dishes. However, if you're a dessert lover, you'll sure be spoilt for choice in Brunetti.

Lastly, they have a 1-for-1 promotion after 7pm from Sunday-Friday on selected desserts, pastries and stuff. So, if you're in the area, no harm swinging by to see what's on sale!

Lastly, here's wishing you a Happy Holidays! :) Hope everyone is doing well and please continue to support our blog by checking up on our new posts, Facebook, instagram and twitter!

La Nonna (Holland Village) | ThumbsForFood

Italian food is one of my favourites. I love pastas! When I heard about the 1-for-1 lunch promotion, I knew that I had to visit this restaurant. La Noona actually means grandmother, so they serve Italian food with a family taste to it.

Everything on the menu is up for the promotion so it is really a good deal. Yes, everything including appetizers and desserts.

Bread to start off our meal.

Look at the awards!
Capellini $21. Capellini pasta with clams in white wine sauce. I felt like having something different that day and so I decided to try this dish! But, it is a little on the bland side. I wouldn't try this again next time though!

Linguine $21. Linguine pasta served with crab meat in Tomato cream sauce and fresh basil. This is one of their recommendations for pasta. I really like this! It is flavourful and the crab meat goes well with the tomato cream sauce as well. Definitely a must-try!

Other than the Linguine, the waiter also recommended us the Spaghetti (Spaghetti Pasta with mixed seafood served in traditional squid ink sauce. I will definitely try this the next time I visit the restaurant!

In the end, we paid around $12 each which was a real bargain for the pasta we had. Have a try at their desserts also!
