Cove Stadium (Quayside Isle) | ThumbsForFood

One of the benefits of having an off day on a weekday is that you'll be able to get to enjoy some Weekday Lunch Promotion! As we were in Sentosa, we decided to make our way to the recent popular destination in Singapore, Quayside Isle for a meal.

If you do not drive, you can hop onto a Shuttle Bus from Beach station (with a frequency of 30mins) and take a walk to Quayside Isle from Sentosa Cove. After walking around the area, we decided to try out Cove Stadium as we were not only attracted to it's very cool sports-themed interior but, also it's lunch promotion.

Entrance of Cove Stadium

We absolutely adore the interior of Cove Stadium with it's open and spacious interior, coupled with a clean modern industrial look. We could imagine how alluring it is at night especially for sports fans who would like to catch the latest matches with a group of friends.

They have Happy Hour from Mondays to Fridays from opening to 10pm. Besides that, they have other drinks promotion ongoing daily. You can visit their website here to find out more about their drinks promotions. We had a 1-for-1 draft Kronenbourg that day.

1-for-1 selected beers for Happy Hour

For their Weekday Lunch Deal, you can choose from 2 courses at $18 or 3 courses at $21. We went for the 3 course deal.

For starters, we chose the Salad over the Soup of the Day. The salad consisted of Greens served with some grilled pieces of chicken. We liked that the greens were fresh and the chicken well-marinated.

Salad
For mains, if I am not mistaken, you get to choose from some selected dishes. We chose the Bacon Spaghetti in Aglio Olio Style. We felt that the pasta was cooked well and well-flavored. However, our qualm would be that the ingredients were not as generous as we would like.

Bacon Spaghetti in Aglio Olio style

Desserts wise, we chose the Strawberry Compote. The dessert was good. It wasn't too sweet yet preserving the natural flavour of Strawberry.

Strawberry Compote

For $21, we thought the lunch deal was really quite worth it. Moreover, prices are nett!

We decided to try their Signature Cove Wagyu Burger. The presentation made the dish looked really appetising! It was served with some salad and a helpful of fries. We felt the patty was a tat too dry that day. I though adding some cheese into the burger will improve the overall flavour of the burger. For $38, we felt the price was a bit too steep. The portion was generous but, we didn't felt like the beef was really of quality.

Generous portion (we feel good for two to share)

Overall, we felt that Cove Stadium's Lunch Deal was really good! Plus, their drinks promotion was really attractive as well. If you are with a large group, you may consider their bucket deals. A bonus to the place is that you can choose the al fresco seats to enjoy the beautiful quayside scenery! The food and drinks here are without any taxes as well. We would love to visit this place at night with a group of friends again!

Fat Cow | ThumbsForFood

Beef lovers have probably heard about Fat Cow, especially for their famed set lunches which include the popular Beef Donburi. Having heard much about it, we decided that we have to make our way down to try it out for ourselves! The plus point about the set lunches are that they are also available on weekends.

For the full set lunch menu, please click here. Set lunch is priced at $38++.

Set lunches are served with Salad, Miso Soup and Chawanmushi, as you can see from the photos below. We felt the salad and miso soup was nothing out of the ordinary. The Chawanmushi was actually quite good. The egg was pretty smooth with ingredients such as prawn, crabmeat and scallop in it. Personally, I really like that the egg was rich and not diluted. Yet, it was able to remain it's smooth and silky texture.

Chawanmushi

We tried 3 different items on their set lunch menu. The first is the famed Fat Cow Donburi. It consists of char-grilled wagyu beef with onsen egg and thinly grated japanese leek. Everyone agreed that it lives up to its name. The onset egg was really one of the best onsen egg I've tasted because it is so perfectly cooked. The wagyu was almost melt-in-the-mouth with a tinge of charcoal fragrance.

Flowy Onsen Egg

If you love foie gras, you've got to try the Fat foa-gura don. It is glazed foie gras with grilled wagyu beef. They added some pickle to it for a balance of flavours. The cubed foie gras was absolutely delicious and totally melts in the mouth. Although the grilled wagyu couldn't beat the char-grilled one, it is still good. The sauce kind of took away some of the original wagyu flavour.

Fat foa-gura don
For those non-beef lovers, there are also other choices such as Chirashi Don (Mixed sashimi don), Tonkatsu Don as well as Gindara Miso Yaki seen below. The Gindara Miso Yaki is miso marinated cod filet. It is quite fresh and done quite well, preserving the natural fish oils in it. Personally, I feel that the highlight is still their wagyu dons.

Gindara Miso Yaki

The only qualm we had was that the portion was quite small. I guess that's what you get for quality food. :) Overall, we felt that food was the Fat Cow Donburi was the winning point with service on the slow side as it was pretty crowded on a weekend. The ambience was not bad as tables were partitioned for some privacy. Do get your tables reserved beforehand to avoid disappointments on weekends!

Carvers & Co. | ThumbsForFood

Carvers & Co., is a new bistro that will be officially opening its doors this Sunday, 8th June. We were thus, honoured to be invited to try out this new place.

Carvers & Co. joins many new cafes and restaurants in the Katong/ East Coast road area. It is run by chef and fitness trainer, Sarah Lin. She was inspired by the cooking techniques and tradition through her farm stay in Southern Italy which was later fuelled by her own passion for cooking for friends through "supper clubs" and other events.

Exterior of Carvers & Co.

As we entered the restaurant, we realised that the space was actually quite small and cozy. It has a seating capacity of about 40 people. Furniture were arranged in a way that encouraged communal dining in groups. The interior was decorated with paintings, some shelves and the colours of the place made the place feel friendly and welcoming.

Carvers' & Co. serve a range of drinks. The highlight would be their coffee. The coffee here are brewed with beans roasted by Common Man Coffee Roasters. You may also speak to the barista and staff to request for pour-overs featuring single origin coffee beans from reputable roaster around the world. These coffee are specially hand-picked by Carvers & Co. and vary from time to time.

If you are interested in learning more about coffee, they have coffee cupping sessions that welcome anyone to join on certain afternoons. Check out their Facebook page for more details!

We tried their Flat White which was aromatic and not too acidic. They offer other drinks such as craft beers, organic colas and wine for those who prefer something else.

Flat White

We tried one of the craft beers, called Palm beer which is a Belgium beer. The beer is supposed to go well with the candied bacon. They also recommend the Massachusetts Pale Ale (No.9) but it was out of stock for the night.

We really liked the Candied Bacon which kind of taste like "Bakkwa". It is a good snack to go with some beer. The bacon is baked in honey and paprika which brings out the malty flavour of the beer, making it creamier.

Candied Bacon

Next up, is their signature brunch item, Truffled Egg-in-the-Hole Toast with Bacon Jam. It is usually served with Candied Bacon as well. Brioche bread is used in this dish where the centre of it has a hole where the pour in a fresh egg. The truffle taste was consistent and we felt sufficient. On the side, bacon jam is served atop a crouton. It was our first time tasting bacon jam and we really liked how the salty bacon was emulsified into a jam that had a balance of both sweet and salty flavours.

Another signature brunch item is the Peanut Butter & Banana Fench Toast. It is served with maple syrup and toasted walnuts. I felt that the edges of the toast were a little too burnt. Other than that, it was really a pleaser especially for those who have a sweet tooth. Really, banana and peanut butter makes a killer combination.

Signature Brunch Items

Carvers & Co. also prides itself with their signature hearty roast meats that can be enjoyed individually or ordered whole and shared. Their choice of roasts varies weekly. You can order their Carvers' Plate which consists of Gammon Ham and carvings of Roast of the Day served with caramelized onions and potato hash. Half a roast is usually at $80 for 4-6 people while a whole roast is at $150 for 8 to 10 people.

Thyme and Rosemary Turkey with a Cider Glaze was served that night. Just look at how beautifully roasted it was! The skin of the turkey was glowing from its marinade.

The turkey was served with Creamy Mash and Caramelised Carrots.

Sides with Turkey

The Creamy Mash was really creamy, smooth and tasty. I'm sure it will be a popular side dish on its own.

Creamy Mash

Personally, I don't really like carrots when they are too raw because the raw carrot flavour is too overpowering for me. Mmmm, but, caramelised carrots are hard not to enjoy because they are sweet and crunchy! The raw flavour of the carrot is totally nonexistent.

Caramelised Carrots

The turkey skin was a favourite amongst the foodies present for it is one of the most flavourful part of the turkey. Turkey meat tends to be generally drier and tougher. We could taste some of the fragrance of the herbs used in the meat but, I felt could be made more tender. I wonder if a pairing of some homemade gravy and cranberry sauce might add more flavour?

Turkey meat

One of their other signature roast is Porketta with Crackling and Apple Chutney. Porketta, or otherwise also known as Porchetta is actually an Italian tradition where the body of the pig is emptied and arranged with stuffing and roasted. The porketta is seasoned with herbs such as garlic and rosemary. The crackling of the Porketta was the highlight as it so light, crispy and tasty. The meat is well-seasoned but I thought it could do with more moisture.

Summer Panzenella is one of the two salads that Carvers & Co. offer currently. It is a  tuscan tomato and bread salad tossed with basil and fried capers. The addition of fried capers is not commonly found in salads but, I found it gave the dish a distinct sour and savory taste.

Summer Panzenella Salad

We got to try their fries with garlic aioli and anchovies. It was an interesting combination of anchovies with fries. I thought it was refreshing pair and enjoyed the combination.

Fries with Garlic Aioli and Anchovies

We felt the Wagyu Steak was the highlight for the night for us. The portion shown below is for 2. If I am not mistaken a portion for 2 is at $75. It really is a generous portion! I enjoyed the garlic and caramelized sides as they give a good balance to the red meat. The doneness was medium which we felt appropriate. It was done evenly and the meat was really tender. We would recommend this dish for all steak lovers! The price is also pretty reasonable for the quality and portion!

Last but not least, our tasting night ended off with Berries crumble served with Ice Cream! It was served hot and the sourness of the berries went well with the sweetness of the crumble and ice-cream.

We would like to thank Sarah, Kimberly and the team for the invite. We gained some knowledge of coffee as well during the cupping session. We would love to visit Carvers & Co. again to try out their other items on the menu.

Roosevelt's Diner & Bar | ThumbsForFood

Roosevelt's Diner & Bar is an all-day diner and bar that serves up a wide range of American-style dishes and drinks at affordable prices in an ambient setting. When we stepped into Roosevelt's we felt that we entered a diner in New York; with it's full length windows, industrial-chic interior and cozy ambience.

We were there at evening time and the restaurant was lighted up with warm, orange ceiling bulbs and candles were placed on every table. Patrons could truly feel relaxed and at ease in this warm environment. We also really liked that the furniture were nicely spaced out as it allows diners to have sufficient personal space to engage in conversations comfortably.

We got to find out that apart from dinner, Roosevelt's has an all-day dining and drinks menu; suitable for all ages, all occasions and anytime of the day.

They have Brunch menu on weekends. On Sundays, you can opt for their free flow Champagne brunch at $55++ with any main ordered. To cater for families with children, they have the Kids' Menu as well. They have a wide variety of food choices ranging from light Sandwiches to main courses such as Steak and Ribs. With their extensive choices, I'm sure that there would be something for everyone!

We got to find out that Roosevelt's pride themselves for their extensive Wine Menu. Apart from that, they also serve up a few types of Beer and cocktails.

As both of us enjoy White Wine better than Red, we sampled all 3 of their Whites. The lightest of the three is the Blanc-Combard ($6 for 75ml) from France. It is slightly acetic with some fruity aroma. The next in line is the Sauvignon Blanc ($7 for 75ml) from New Zealand. It has a fruity taste and I feel is the least spicy wine of the three. The strongest is the Chardonnay, slightly woody with fruity flavours and a buttery note.

My personal favourite of the three is the Sauvignon while Z's favourite was the Chardonnay. White wine pairs well with Seafood. We personally find the price of wine in Roosevelt's very affordable. It also comes served in 150ml as well as in bottle form. For those looking for something for higher quality bottles, they also have a collection of that.

We tried the Lindeman's Fruit Beer that Roosevelt's carry. They also have Estrella and other fruit beers in their menu.

Lindeman's Peach Beer ($11) is a favourite amongst ladies for it is light and sweet in nature.

Lindeman's Peach Beer

Lindeman's Peach Beer
Our host, Amanda's favourite is the Cherry Beer. We find that Cherry is an acquired taste. So, for those who love Cherry, this would be the beer of choice. Similar to the Peach Beer, fruit beers are generally lighter in alcohol content and usually more popular amongst ladies.

We ordered the Garlic Prawns ($12) as one of our Side Dish. Roosevelt's sides range from $7-$12 each. We would love to try their other sides such as Truffle Fries and Fried Oysters the next time we are here. Z's favourite is the Garlic Prawns. She likes is so much that she had 2 servings. The prawns are evenly cooked with an aromatic garlic flavour. The prawns are crunchy whichI would prefer to the soggy ones.

Garlic Prawns

Another side that we tried is their Jalapeño Bacon Mac and Cheese ($11). The Jalapeño flavour was really strong and it added a spicy note to the dish. What was different from Roosevelt's Mac and Cheese is that the added a layer of Bread Crumbs on it, which made the whole Mac and Cheese drier in nature. Personally, I would like the Mac and Cheese to be less dry.

We tried their Popular Japanese Sesame Salad ($12) consisting of tofu, mixed greens, cherry tomatoes and seaweed. We felt the winning point of this dish is the Seaweed. The Sesame sauce was also very light, making this salad a refreshing dish to start a meal. This dish is recommended for those looking for something healthy and tasty.

Japanese Sesame Salad

We were also recommended their Truffle Fish Pie ($19). They fish pie had generous chunks of snapper coated with their signature beer batter. We really love the crust of the pie and the crispy crust went really well with the creamy contents of the pie. Personally, we would have liked the Truffle taste to be stronger. However, we also note that some people would probably enjoy this version better. I also really like that the dish was served piping hot out of the oven, making the pie outstanding in taste.

Truffle Fish Pie

We also ordered Teddy's 100% Beef Burger ($20) that was quite raved about from other online reviews. They also have a Candied Bacon version for those who prefer something sweeter to contrast with the savoury beef patty. Teddy's patty is not as dense as other burger patties and makes it more chewy in texture. The whole burger is quite a huge portion and we feel is good for sharing.

We would love to try their other mains such as Baby Back Ribs and Steak in future! For the portion and quality of the food, we find the prices of the mains quite reasonable.

After the mains, we ordered some other drinks to go with our desserts. Z chose the Elderflower Gin Fiz ($16) as recommended by the staff. She found the drink really refreshing and light. It is a suitable drink to pair it with some sweets.

Elderflower Gin Fiz

I was too tempted by the Milkshakes on the menu and decided to go for the Salted Caramel Milkshake ($8). It was really a huge cup and I could barely finish considering the amount of food that I had eaten. I got to say this is one of the better milkshakes I have tasted. It is not as sweet and does not have an artificial milk taste. Do try this if you are a fan of milkshakes.

Salted Caramel Milkshake
For our dessert, we ordered the Flourless Chocolate cake served with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream as well as Mixed Berries and Apple Crumble also topped with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream. I like that they pair their dessert with Ice Cream as it gives the desserts a balance.

The Flourless Chocolate Cake was really rich. It was made of Dark Chocolate and dense in texture. I enjoyed the cake and would think that this will be a favourite amongst Chocolate lovers. The Mixed Berries and Apple Crumble is served with Granola and a handful of fruits. The Berries were slightly sour and complemented really well with the caramelised apple.

Overall, we feel that the desserts offered by Roosevelt's are really good for sharing as they are served in quite a generous portion.

Roosevelt's also have a lunch menu (11am-2pm) for those working in the area which comes with a free cup of artisanal coffee or tea with every order from the menu. For Roosevelt's full menu, you can click here

Overall, we had a good dinner, completed with great drinks, desserts and good company from our host, Amanda. We would like to extend our thanks to Roosevelt's for having us and hope to return to Roosevelt to try more items from their menu.
