Kin Kin Pan Mee 建记辣椒板面 | ThumbsForFood

Finally the hype (and queue) over Kin Kin Pan Mee is over! When it first opened in Singapore, I was really tempted to join the long queues and try the ban mian but I am glad I didn't waste my time and effort doing that.

We had the Signature Dry Chilli Pan Mee ($5) and the fish ball, bean sheet and meat ball soup ($4). The ingredients in the ban mian were minced meat, meat ball, anchovies and egg. The egg is definitely one of the highlights of the bowl of noodles. All the eggs were done consistently, with a runny yolk. A good way to eat it would be to toss the noodles with the yolk and other ingredients! I am not a fan of egg yolk but I enjoyed my noodles.

I have heard a lot about the dry chilli flakes and I must say that it didn't disappoint. I love spicy food and the chilli complements the noodles very well. We agreed that the unique point about Kin Kin Pan Mee is the dry chilli.

We also shared a bowl of fish ball, bean sheet and meat ball soup. It was pretty ordinary but I guess it is good for sharing!

Overall, I think that Kin Kin Chilli Pan Mee is definitely one of the better dry ban mian in Singapore but I certainly would not spend hours queuing for this! Yes, there is no queue for it now so head down if you have not tried it yet!

Have you tried Face Ban Mian 非板面 at Ang Mo Kio before? I will be posting about it very soon so stay tuned to our blog!

Beach Road Prawn Mee Eating House | ThumbsForFood

Prawn Mee is one of my favourite hawker food in Singapore. My favourite stall is Noo Cheng Adam Road Prawn Mee at Zion Riverside Food Centre. I love the thick, robust flavours of the prawn mee soup!

So.... when I was around the area, I decided to try out this famous Beach Road Prawn Mee. I was there on a Sunday afternoon and there was quite a long queue. But, the queue moved quite fast though! The big prawns were really fresh (we had the $10 one I think). But, I felt that that soup was not as thick as I would like it to be.

There is also a fried ngoh hiang stall (East Coast Ngoh Hiang) in the same shop house. I like the crispy prawn crackers the most! I would definitely order from the stall again if I were to head down for more prawn noodles next time round.

Overall, I really like the convenience of having both prawn mee and ngoh hiang in the same place but I still prefer my prawn mee at Zion Riverside Food Centre!

Which is your favourite prawn mee stall in Singapore? Please share with us!

2 loaves | ThumbsForFood

2 loaves is a bakery that is nestled in the neighbourhood of Commonwealth. This unassuming small bakery offers an array of bakes such as cookies, cakes, banana bread and more.

When we first stepped into this bakery, the displays on the counter placed in the centre of the shop were the first thing that caught our eyes. We really like how the cakes were delectably displayed as it really whets the appetite. The only thing about 2 loaves is that they did not have any seats available for patrons who wish to dine in. However, this might change in the near future as they have plans to add a few seats.

Bakes on Display

We tried their Strawberry Cheesecake. It was really rich in flavour and moist. What I really liked was also the crust of the cheesecake that complemented really well with the cheese layer. The strawberry in the cake created balance to the cake.

We also tried the Banana Chocolate Loaf. They have other flavours such as S'mores as well as Chocolate base cake with banana fillings to cater to different preferences. The load wasn't too sweet which was good. It was quite dense and is definitely a loaf that is suitable for sharing.

For takeaway, 2 loaves uses environmental-friendly paper boxes. I really like their boxes and it makes the cakes and loaf suitable as gifts.

We bought back green tea cookies as well. It was really good and addictive. Do give it a try when you visit 2 loaves!

Overall, we feel that 2 loaves is an unpretentious bakery that serves up good bakes. Do visit this place if you are in the area to try out their specials. They also accept orders for whole cakes and large orders. :)

S(he)Brews | ThumbsForFood

Hello, how has your weekend been? Hope all is good for you! [:

S(he)brews café is a unique café located at the west side of Singapore. I wouldn't expect to find such a nicely decorated café in a community centre! Yes, S(he)brews café is located in Queenstown Community Centre. I love how the café gives off the old kampong days feel. It was a short (and sweet) respite from the city life that we are all leading. I went on a Sunday and it was almost empty. Glad that I didn't have to squeeze with others in a crowded café!

A down side to the café is that it is not air-conditioned.

Iced lychee tea. Well, the drinks and food that S(he)brews café offers are quite simple and limited so don't hold your expectations too high. A refreshing drink to have to cool myself down from the hot weather.

We also ordered a latte and a hot tea to share. The coffee wasn't fabulous but the ambience made up for it!

Waffles with ice-cream $4.50. For the price, I would definitely pay to eat this again!

Spicy drumlets (5 for $3.50). The drumlets were quite yummy! I mean, for this price, it's really good!

Overall, I enjoyed my tea break at S(he)brews café. If you stay near this area, why not head down to have some coffee/tea and snacks? [:

Seng Kee Bak Kut Teh | ThumbsForFood

I love to eat pig trotters and will always have strange cravings for it! Yes, I know how fattening pig trotters are... but I really like the taste of the skin (collagen right?) and the sauce! For people who are on a look out for good hawker food in Singapore, please keep yourself updated on this space because I will be posting reviews on delicious hawker food all around Singapore. Well, I will also be doing up a post on some of the stalls that I have discovered in Ang Mo Kio area. If you have been following our blog, you would have realized that we rarely do up reviews on the North side of the island. We will be working hard to share with our readers food all around Singapore from now on! :D

Back to the original topic of today: Seng Kee Bak Kut Teh

A friend of mine shared with me that there is this really yummy bak kut teh in the AMK area and so I decided to give it a try! It is located at Chong Boon Food Centre which is just a few bus stops away from AMK mrt station.

Pig trotters (Te Kar). This was really good. One of the better pig trotters that I have tasted in Singapore. The meat was well braised and very soft. Definitely worth trying!

Salted vegetables. This was pretty normal but I will always order sian cai (salted vegetables) because it goes really well with bak kut teh!

Bak Kut Teh. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed with the bowl of soup. I am a huge fan of bak kut teh and the one I frequent the most is Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh. I will definitely prefer Ya Hua's soup over Seng Kee's. The soup was a bit too oily for my liking.

Overall, I had a good experience at Seng Kee Bak Kut Teh. I will definitely be back for the pig trotters that is so sinful yet so tasty!

The Marshmallow Tree Cafe (Telok Blangah) | ThumbsForFood

Happy Midweek, everyone!

Recently, there are so many new cafes that I am at a lost as to which one to visit first. When I saw the location of Marshmallow Tree Cafe, I knew it would be one of my top choices as it is super near to my house. A perfect choice to chill and read on a lazy Sunday [: It is located in a corner of the Telok Blangah neighbourhood. Just a short walk from the Telok Blangah MRT!

I love the decor of the cafe. It gives off a cosy feeling which makes me feel like staying there to just read my book or talk to my friends. Well, I would really love to do that but there was a constant crowd on the Sunday that I visited and we did not want to deprive others of their coffee drinking chances! This newly set-up cafe can seat around 20-odd people I think; pretty tiny space!

Look at how cute the Marshmallow tree is! A must to take photo of this little tree.

Selection of sweets

Love the clear blue skies!

Kids having fun on the swing!
Hot tea $3.50. They serve Twinings tea at the Marshmallow Tree cafe! Not really a fan of Twinings tea; probably because it is easily accessible at supermarkets and convenience stores! Well, but on days when coffee is a little too heavy, tea is the only choice!

Latte $4.50. I thought that the coffee was pretty good! And, the coffee art was good too! For a small budding cafe, Marshmallow tree cafe has definitely surpassed my expectations of it!

A differentiating point about this cafe is that they serve up their drinks with a roasted marshmallow! Loveeeee it! Though it is nothing fascinating, we were all still pretty hyped up when the marshmallows came. Reminded us of the good old days when we would all fight for the marshmallows during BBQ sessions. If only they had free flow of marshmallows or something, it would be so perfect!

Hot chocolate $5.50. I liked the hot chocolate as well as it was thick and milky enough! Would order it on days when I don't need caffeine.

My mum enjoying her roasted marshmallow as well! Yums [:

Love the frames + domo!
Iced Rose Lemon Tea $4.50. Surprisingly, it didn't have the rose taste that I dislike. Pretty refreshing drink!

Macaron Smores $4.50. Well, I was really excited to order this as it sounded interesting. But, I was pretty disappointed when I tried it. The macaron cover were a tad too hard and the whole thing just tasted too sweet for my liking.

Waffles with a scoop of ice-cream $7.50. This is a simple yet satisfying dessert! A safe choice!

Domo Cup $4.50.  I would say this is something that I would order again the next time I visit the cafe! Melted marshmallows on top with nutella and biscuits at the bottom of the cup. Definitely something that will lift your mood up high into the skies!

Overall, I feel that the Marshmallow Tree Cafe is worthy place to visit. However, the cafe does not really serve proper meals so I would suggest dropping by for a cup of coffee and some sweets! Setting itself in a neighbourhood environment and having a unique theme of its own, I foresee increasing popularity of this newly opened cafe!

Johor Bahru: Ya Wang | ThumbsForFood

For all Chinese Roasted Duck lovers, I'm sure you'll be familiar with Dian Xiao Er in Singapore. So, today, we'll introduce you to the appointed advisor of Dian Xiao Er, that is Ya Wang (King of Ducks) that is situated in Johor Bahru. The location is really near City Square, thus, really quite convenient for you to walk there! It is really near to Kam Long Curry Fish Head as well.

It is not difficult to spot Ya Wang as you could spot it from afar from the huge duck hanging at it's entrance.
Ya Wang Entrance
As you approach Ya Wang, you will be able to see the various meat they have to offer. Apart from the famed duck, you will also be able to spot others like Shao Rou (Crispy Roasted Pork Belly) and Shao Ji (Roasted Chicken). The exterior of the shop easily reveals that the age of the shop. The good thing about the place is it is air-conditioned and thus, really good to escape the heat!

Shop Face
They have various choices of herbal duck such as Shi Quan Kao Ya (Ten Spices Herbal Roasted Duck) and Dang Gui Kao Ya (Chinese Angelica Root Roasted Duck). We tried both the flavors and our favorite is the Shi Quan Kao Ya. The gravy of the duck is really fragrant and taste really similar to the one at Dian Xiao Er. Price-wise, it's definitely more affordable.

Herbal Roasted Duck
Apart from their Roasted Duck, Ya Wang offers other food as well. Their other food is in the form of Tzi Char style. Price wise, it is quite affordable. They offer sets as well that includes soup, vegetable and other dishes to complement the duck.

Their Seafood Tofu and Vegetable Claypot was served hot and what was good was that the ingredients were really generous! Apart from that, it is not very fascinating but a really good dish to go with plain rice.

Seafood Tofu and Vegetable Claypot

Xiao Bai Cai is one of our favorite vegetable. The one here was tasty, fresh and succulent. If you like Xiao Bai Cai like us, do give it a try!

Xiao Bai Cai
Kang Kong in Malay Style (Ma Lai Feng Guang) is Kang Kong cooked with chili. It is nothing special but, definitely whets one's appetite due to it's flavor.

Kang Kong in Malay Style
As you can see from the picture below, we also ordered their Lotus Soup. The soup was of mediocre standard but we would order it again if we are craving for some.

All in all, Ya Wang serves as a cheaper alternative to tasty Herbal Roasted Duck. It is not your usual duck with extra crispy skin but it is a duck that brings out a fragrant taste after immersing in the various Herbal gravies. We will definitely be back if we are craving for some duck!

Dishes we ordered
We will bring you more JB food haunts to expand your food checklist when you cross the causeway next time! So, do look out for our upcoming posts on it.

Check out Ya Wang's other branch at Taman Sentosa below!
